Our Story

Leopard Frog marries the Old World with the New World.
Leopard Frog's respect for the past, passion for the present and foresight for the future is acknowledged in our heritage and our history.

History

DavidLeopard Frog Vineyards was founded in 2005 as the vision of Canadian winemaker and proprietor David Bate.

David handcrafts award-winning iconic wines that integrate the structure and sophistication of Old Word varietals with the sensuality and approachabilty of New World varietals within complex yet well balanced couture Cape wines pleasing to the mind, body and soul.

To achieve such arrangements, Leopard Frog combines handfuls of premium varietals grown on family-owned farms in the heart of the historic wine capital of Stellenbosch, South Africa.

Grapes have grown on these properties for over 300 years, and the ensuing confluence of historic terroir and high quality cépage bestows upon Leopard Frog wines their unique identity and character, particularly the nuances of fruits, spices and herbs found within every bottle of Leopard Frog wine.

David subsequently created the United Nations of Wine, an international private cellar dedicated to producing high quality, earth-friendly wines in innovative packaging formats that help save the planet.

HeritageHeritage

In appreciation of the stature of First Nations’ culture as the Old World of the New World and acknowledgement of the winemaker's birthplace, Leopard Frog commissioned well known Coast Salish artist Jody Wilson to create an emblem which interprets traditional First Nations’ design in a contemporary style reflective of Leopard Frog’s winemaking philosophy.

The frog is one of the most important mythical figures of the Old World and the New World, with significance in the mysticism of China, Buddhism of India, sects of ancient Egypt, early Christian culture, Celtic traditions, shamanism, animism and many European fables.

In First Nations’ culture, the frog often symbolizes the ideal integration of earth and water in nature. Honouring this heritage, Leopard Frog's Coast Salish emblem represents the optimal integration of terroir and cépage in our wine.

The First Nations' frog is also a messenger of wealth, often bearing gifts of good fortune. Leopard Frog's Coast Salish emblem continues this custom as emissary of the wealth of subtle yet significant sensations unfolding in the bouquet and taste of every bottle of Leopard Frog wine.
